For the Love of the Lake, in partnership with the White Rock Lake Conservancy, recently funded an extension of the goat grazing project at White Rock Lake Park—bringing a unique and eco-friendly solution to a persistent environmental challenge.
Approximately 300 goats were deployed from the Bath House to Boy Scout Hill for over 10 days, targeting invasive privet. This aggressive plant threatens the health of the ecosystem by increasing erosion, blocking visibility, and raising wildfire risks. Left unmanaged, privet can quickly overtake native vegetation and disrupt the natural balance of the area.
By using goats to clear privet, the project offers a sustainable alternative to traditional land management methods. Goat grazing is quiet, efficient, and eliminates the need for fuel-powered equipment—reducing both air and noise pollution. At the same time, it helps stabilize soil and supports the preservation of native habitats.
This initiative highlights how innovative, nature-based solutions can make a meaningful impact in protecting and restoring White Rock Lake Park for the community to enjoy.
